Joining Friends of Hospice
Friends of Hospice was started by one woman, Pat Chargin, who wanted to make a difference in the lives of people with terminal illnesses. Today our many members continue to make a positive difference in our community.
Joining Friends is simple; we ask that you pay $20 per year in dues ($30 per couple) and that you participate on at least two committees. Friends of Hospice meet quarterly to discuss on going activities and plan events.

Calendar of Events & Member Activities
Butterfly Garden of Remembrance
Sat-Mon, May 24, 25, 26, 2008 . Hooper and Weaver Mortuary, Nevada City
takes place during the Memorial Day Weekend at Hooper and Weaver in Nevada City. Painted, wrought iron butterflies (garden stakes) are placed in this designated garden in memory of loved one(s). A donation of $15 is collected for each remembrance.
Committee members prepare the invitations for mailing, and paint, place and remove the butterfly stakes.
Breakfast in the Park
Sun, July 27, 2008 . St. Canice Center, Nevada City
is an annual event held in July at St. Canice Center, a social hall located in a beautiful wooded area in Nevada City. Over 700 guests are served a full breakfast cooked by the County Sheriffs’ Association. Preplanning includes publicity and the purchase of the food, paper goods for serving, decorations and other supplies. Members of “Friends” sell tickets, obtain raffle prizes, conduct a raffle, prepare the food for cooking, and work as hosts, servers, dishwashers and on the clean-up crew.
Tree of Love
December 8, 2008 . Sierra Presbyterian Church, Grass Valley
is an annual tree-lighting ceremony held in December. A mailing to some 5,000 members of the community solicits donations to "Light a Light" in memory or honor of loved ones. The tree lighting is followed by a large reception in a local church where refreshments are served.
Preplanning includes the publicity, mailing, and reserving space for recognition of donors in the local newspaper. Members of "Friends" receive the donations, record donors for publication, decorate the hall, prepare and serve refreshments. The local power company donates time and labor for hanging the lights and removing them after the holiday season.
On going events
Pennies for Hospice
is an ongoing fundraiser. Collection cans are placed in various local retail stores for donations and four penny drives are held in front of business locations each year. The committee members are responsible for collecting and counting periodically.
Caring Friends
One of the hallmarks of Friends of Hospice is the gift of a handmade teddy bear for each patient admitted for hospice care. The bears are made by members of the “Caring Friends” committee, and each bear wears a banner cross-stitched with “Caring Friends”. The bears are distributed to the patients by the nurse case managers. In addition, the committee for Caring Friends meets several times each year to prepare holiday theme gifts for the patients.
Quarterly Luncheons
Members meet quarterly to discuss on going activities and events. Luncheon Meetings are held at Alta Sierra Country Club. Menus and choices along with the dates for the Meetings are posted in the Newsletter.

Caring Friends
This committee meets to assemble favors for our patient trays that are seasonal in nature. They also sew hand made bears and provide birthday cards and plants.
Pennies
This committee has Coin Banks in various businesses in Nevada City and Grass Valley. Each Member is in charge of collecting the funds and they meet periodically to count the proceeds.
